Until 2024, many mobile networks have increased contract prices in line with inflation. Starting in January 2025, Ofcom will introduce a ban on inflation-linked price hikes for new contracts. Future price changes will need to be set and fully disclosed in pounds and pence.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the flagship device of Apple’s 2025 lineup. With its expansive 6.9-inch display, cutting-edge performance, new 2TB storage option and new 48MP ‘Fusion’ camera array, this model pushes the iPhone experience to new heights.
The handset features a refined design with slimmer bezels and premium titanium materials, alongside exclusive features that won’t be found on the standard iPhone 17 or the new iPhone Air. This makes the Pro Max the go-to choice for users who want the biggest and most powerful iPhone Apple has to offer.
6.9-inch OLED with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz
Aluminium unibody frame with Ceramic Shield on both sides of the phone
48MP 'Fusion' triple-lens setup with 8x optical zoom and 18MP 'Center Stage' selfie camera
The iPhone 17 Pro Max comes at four different prices depending on the internal storage you choose:
It was available for pre-order on Friday, 12 September, and officially went on sale (or arrived if you pre-ordered it) on Friday, 19 September.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has levelled up its design, with Apple opting for an aluminium frame for one of the lightest iPhone Pro phones ever.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max retains Apple’s iconic look, but with a new ‘aluminium unibody’ frame and ‘forged plateau’ bump surrounding the triple-lens camera display on the back.
New colours set the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models apart from the rest: Deep Blue, Silver, and a relatively new colour for Apple, Cosmic Orange.
With a huge 6.9-inch screen, the Pro Max stands out as the boldest and most premium-looking iPhone in the new range.
At 6.9 inches, the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s Super Retina XDR display is once again the largest available on any iPhone from the new range. It has another incredibly bright and sharp screen, with ProMotion 120Hz refresh rates that scale for smoother performance and improved battery efficiency.
3000 nits of brightness make outdoor use easier than ever, while HDR support ensures that videos, photos, and games look incredibly vibrant and lifelike.
Apple’s camera capabilities have been upgraded even further with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Like its smaller compatriot, the 17 Pro, all three cameras on the back of the model are new 48MP ‘Fusion’ cameras, and the selfie camera has been upgraded to an 18MP ‘Center Stage’ lens with added functionality. Here’s a full list of the cameras sported by the iPhone 17 Pro Max:
Features like High-Resolution Portraits and AI-assisted editing have expanded, giving photographers and content creators a reason to opt for the Pro Max over smaller models.
Apple has made sure to improve the filmmaking qualities of the iPhone with the latest model.
Its Dolby Vision HDR and 4K120 video capturing capabilities have been complemented with ProRes RAW, which will make films shot on the iPhone 17 Pro Max look more professional than ever for a smartphone.
Apple didn’t announce any specific new AI features for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, as those announcements came with the launch of its latest operating system, iOS 26.
At the heart of the iPhone 17 Pro Max is the new A19 Pro chip, featuring a six-core CPU and six-core GPU. It’s designed to power Apple’s most advanced AI features and deliver faster overall performance than ever before.
A new thermal system and vapour chamber further improve the phone’s performance, ensuring it doesn’t overheat when used for big computational tasks (like mobile gaming).
There’s also an improved battery capacity to offset the larger screen size, but Apple isn’t usually specific about the size of the battery it uses in its phones. With Apple continuing to refine energy efficiency, the 17 Pro Max could be the longest-lasting iPhone yet, despite its powerful hardware.
This year, there isn’t much difference between the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the standard Pro model. Here’s a brief list of the differences you may see:
If you’re a serious smartphone power user (content creator, filmmaker, designer, competitive gamer) and have a big budget for your next smartphone, then the iPhone 17 Pro Max is likely the right option for you.
However, if you’re more of a casual phone user, you could absolutely get away with a cheaper version of the iPhone 17 range if you’re looking for a brand-new iPhone. Even better, many of the previous iPhone ranges are still readily available at decent prices now that they’re not part of the newest range.

For all the hype it gets, the Pro Max isn’t necessarily the only flagship smartphone you could enjoy. Both Samsung and Google Pixel have equally impressive top-end phones in the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL.
Smaller smartphone brands will also offer handsets with comparable features to the 17 Pro Max, but the above two options are probably the most readily available like-for-like alternatives.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is available to pre-order from Friday, September 12. At that point, several prominent UK mobile networks will start offering handset contracts for each phone in the new range.
